The global games industry has become an economic behemoth that keeps on growing. This growth, however, also results in an unavoidable ecological footprint that can neither be denied nor ignored and that demands accountability.
Games as a Messenger
It is refreshing to see more and more developers use the potential of games to tackle serious topics and spread important messages – in a playful yet impactful way. We will take a stroll through the wonderful world of gaming and look at titles that deal with issues such as climate change and environmental protection.
Developing an eco-friendly Industry
The games industry is the sixth largest industry worldwide and the question of its sustainability is legitimate.
While ‘Green Gaming’ has begun to raise awareness, thereby gaining increasing traction over the past few years, the industry as a whole – and that definitely includes the players – still has a long way to go.
Join the devcom Call for Change Summit #1, 2022 to learn more about the industry’s impact on the environment and climate change, about how to reduce your studio’s carbon footprint, as well as a variety of eco-initiatives, and learn from fellow industry representatives about what you can do to do your part.

"Eden Burning" is a scenario which was added to Ubisoft's real-time strategy game "Anno 1800" in December 2021.
It has been developed by Ubisoft Mainz during the Green Game Jam and is meant to raise awareness about environmental issues. It takes place in a small New World region on an island La Xultuna. Playing as Isabel Sarmento, your goal is to get rid of the remains after Pyrphorian's occupation and build a dam as a green source of energy. All of that has to be accomplished while taking care about the environment of the island.
"The Great Ocean" is a VR-Game about how Climate Change and (plastic) pollution have an influence on the ocean health and our lifes and what can and is being done about it.
In the game the player can choose different regional chapters from around the globe of threatened ocean regions and then explore these underwater in a science submarine. You solve missions and learn about threats but also solutions to the problems the Oceans are facing. One key aim is to show positive examples of what is being done and what everybody can do to make an end to (plastic) pollution of our world and how to reduce your impact on the climate.
Michael Geidel, Producer at Actrio Studio, and Denis Bled, Co-Founder of Ender Ocean, will be joining us to talk about the game – and they'll also present their talk "How real and CGI robots will help clean the ocean" on the 2nd day of the Call for Change Summit (Thursday, March 10).
"Plasticity" is a hauntingly beautiful puzzle-platformer where you explore a plastic-ridden world. Traverse flooded cities and ravaged lands as you make choices that profoundly change both gameplay and your future. The game was created by students from the renowned USC Games Program and contains 20-40 minutes of content. It is available for free on Steam.
"Beyond Blue" takes players into the near future, where they will have the opportunity to explore the mysteries of our ocean through the eyes of Mirai, a deep-sea explorer and scientist. She and her newly-formed research team will use groundbreaking technologies to see, hear, and interact with the ocean in a more meaningful way than has ever been attempted. The game features an evocative narrative and exploration of an untouched world.
Developer E-Line Media partnered with BBC Studios, OceanX Media, world-class game makers, and some of science’s leading ocean experts to craft an experience that reflects the awesome wonder and unbounded mystery that infuses our planet’s beating blue heart.
